Welcome to The Cruelty-Free Face!
I’m a serious animal lover and my pets are “my babies”. Cruelty-free skin care, make-up and personal care is my passion.
It was a shocker for me to find out that animal testing is still prevalent in skin care and cosmetics. The goal of this site is to inform and give alternatives if moving into cruelty-free and healthier options are of interest to you.
On the right side of this page, you will find a list of humane and healthy ingredient affiliate companies that I can recommend. The Company Guide describes each of my Affiliate Companies in detail and links directly to their sites.
The blog posts give some insight into animal testing practices, lifestyle tips, political changes regarding cosmetic animal testing and product reviews. Have a look through the menu, feel free to leave me a note in the comments. I’d love to hear from you!
How did I get here?
Sadly I had gone most of my life not realizing that most skin care and cosmetics lines are involved in animal testing in one way or another. I feel like I was complicit in the practice of Animal Testing throughout the years due to my lack of knowledge on the subject. Not anymore!!!! I’ve gradually moved into Cruelty-Free products, replacing anything questionable with every new product purchase.
I support small independent cruelty-free companies that are on the cutting edge of product development. Being cruelty-free limits their market on the global scale and I love that they are willing to stick to their principles at the expense of bigger markets.
While researching companies to introduce you to, I discovered that there is a huge bonus! Many of these companies are also a combination of vegan, gluten-free, organic, Eco-certified, chemical-free, paraben-free, synthetic-free and toxin-free. THAT IS AWESOME!!!! The Cruelty-Free and Vegan movement is growing rapidly, so too is Gluten Free, Organic and non-GMO. If you’re confused about any of these terms I have a blog post that outlines what it all means and where cross-over can happen in products. If you have any further questions or just general comments just drop me a note.
The sad, hard truth
White Rabbit Republic estimates that approximately 100,000-200,000 animals suffer and die just for cosmetics every year around the world. Rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, rats and mice. Dogs and monkeys are never used to test cosmetics anywhere in the world, they are used to test other types of chemicals. So sad for me to think of.
So how hard is it to develop safe and effective cosmetics and skin care? Not hard at all. There are thousands and thousands of existing make-up and cosmetic ingredients that are already proven safe and effective and testing isn’t necessary! That’s how cruelty-free is done.
For companies that still participate in animal testing, they are often looking for the next best “thing” or ingredient. When the new ingredient doesn’t have safety data, it has to be generated before the product can be approved for sale. Usually, that means animal testing, hence a choice made by these companies.
In the past, non-animal tests have not been a priority but it’s beginning to change. It will take some time but my hope is that we will get there. In the meantime, we can do what we can with our purchasing power. Saving animals one product at a time and supporting smart, leading edge and gutsy companies is where I’ll start.
