Recently, I was asked what products, other than facial care and cosmetics, fall into the Animal Tested zone? Let me tell you, the list is massive. Pretty much every aspect of personal care is involved in animal testing. Here you go, hair products, soap and bath, fragrance, oral care, deodorant, feminine hygiene, laundry, cleaning and miscellaneous household goods. Are you surprised? Did you have any idea? Most people say yes and no respectively, to those two questions. It’s a dirty little secret.
This post is to answer questions I’ve received and help you make informed purchasing decisions based on your personal needs. You will notice that a massive list of products is listed which makes one think “what IS cruelty-free?” “How do I possibly stay cruelty-free?” Some products are pretty hard to live without, feminine hygiene for one, am I right ladies? I hope that one-day companies will comply with consumer demand and use the new methods that are being developed and stop the practice of animal testing. In the meantime, you can write to companies and ask why they continue with this practice? You can ask them why they don’t use the existing databases of ingredients safe to humans and animals?
The most comprehensive list of Animal-Tested Products and the companies that participate is put out by PETA. For this post, I will reference The Cruelty-Free Kitty as they supplement PETA’s list with their research, put them in succinct lists and I don’t need to reinvent the wheel here. Cruelty-Free Kitty has done a fabulous job, and I thank them!
I prefer to use the list of offending companies rather than the list of companies or products certified cruelty-free. Why? Because many Cruelty-Free companies aren’t approved by an organization. Why not? Because they likely let their record speak for itself and haven’t gone through the certification process.
Here we go, The Animal Tested Products List, I too was surprised!
